Fibrinogen activity, also known as Clauss, is a crucial blood test that quantifies the functional capacity of fibrinogen, a pivotal protein implicated in the process of blood coagulation. Please find below the essential information regarding this test:

The fibrinogen activity test is utilized for numerous major therapeutic purposes:

Diagnosing inherited or acquired fibrinogen abnormalities
Evaluation of hemorrhagic
Monitoring disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
Assessment of hepatic function
Monitoring thrombolytic treatment
Quantifying the risk of cardiovascular disease
A low amount of fibrinogen activity can be indicative of bleeding disorders, whereas high levels may imply an elevated risk of clotting or inflammation.

Standard Reference Range

The normal reference range for fibrinogen activity in adults is: 193-507 mg/dL for those 17 years and older
180-383 mg/dL for individuals 7 months to 16 years old.

However, reference ranges might differ amongst laboratories; therefore, results should be interpreted depending on the specific lab's range.

Interpretation of Results

Low values (<50 mg/dL) may suggest bleeding problems, liver illness, or DIC
High values (>700 mg/dL) can signify inflammation, infection, or increased clotting risk
Both low and high values require clinical correlation and perhaps further testing

Test Procedure

This test necessitates the extraction of a blood sample from a vein, usually located in the arm. No additional preparation is normally needed, although patients should inform their healthcare provider about any medications or supplements they are taking.

To summarize, the fibrinogen activity (Clauss) test is an important method for evaluating blood clotting ability and identifying different coagulation abnormalities. The results of this test should be analyzed together with clinical observations and other coagulation tests to ensure precise diagnosis and treatment planning.
