Testosterone, Free, Bioavailable and Total (With Lower & Upper Limit) plus SHBG
This is the most cost effective testosterone test panel that takes the least amount of time to perform and that includes 5 important tests: 1- Total testosterone, 2- Calculated free testosterone, 3- Bioavailable (unbound) testosterone, 4- Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and albumin. Testosterone upper limit under 1,500 ng/dL (ECLIA, immunoassay). It is accurate for most men using or not using TRT . For men expecting very high testosterone blood levels over 1,500 ng/dL or low total T below 250 ng/dL, the LC/MS testosterone test is more appropriate, but it takes a few more days to perform. NOTE: Despite SHBG not being listed on the lab requisition form under "Testosterone, Free, Bioavailable, and Total, Males (Adult)," rest assured the results include this critical component, as it's necessary for calculating bioavailable testosterone.
This is the fastest turnaround testosterone test panel that takes the least amount of time to perform and that includes 5 important tests: 1- Total testosterone, 2- Calculated free testosterone, 3- Calculated bioavailable (unbound) testosterone, 4- Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and albumin. Testosterone has an upper limit under 1,500 ng/dL and lower limit of 250 ng/dL (ECLIA, immunoassay).
- Uses an immunoassay method for testosterone measurement
1
.Includes total testosterone, albumin, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) measurements. - Calculates free and bioavailable testosterone based on these measurements.
Includes
- Testosterone, Total, Males (Adult), Immunoassay
- Albumin
- Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)
- Testosterone, Free and Bioavailable (calculated)
This panel is accurate for most men using or not using TRT .
There are several types of testosterone tests that can be used to measure the levels of testosterone in a person's body. These tests include:
-
Total testosterone test: This test measures the total amount of testosterone in the blood. It is the most common type of testosterone test and is used to diagnose testosterone deficiency or excess.
-
Free testosterone test: This test measures the amount of testosterone that is not bound to proteins in the blood. It is used to diagnose testosterone deficiency or excess and to monitor testosterone therapy.
-
Bioavailable testosterone test: This test measures the amount of testosterone that is available to the body's cells. It is used to diagnose testosterone deficiency or excess and to monitor testosterone therapy.
For men expecting very high testosterone blood levels over 1,500 ng/dL or low testosterone levels under 250 ng/dL, the testosterone LC/MS panel or the Testosterone Total LC/MS & Free T by Equilibrium Analysis, Biovailable T and SHBG panel is more appropiate but takes a few more days to perform.
Women can order this other testosterone panel since their T levels may be lower, which requires liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry for accuracy.
Important Note on Test Accuracy for Low Testosterone Levels:
Due to the diminished accuracy of immunoassay at total testosterone levels below 250 ng/dL, calculations of the Free and Bioavailable Testosterone are not accurate and will not be reported.
Lab Test Collection Instructions
Testosterone, Total, Males (Adult), Immunoassay: Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation.
Note: The lab requisition form will list this test as
Testosterone, Free, Bioavailable and Total, Males (Adult)
without including SHBG. No worries! The results will include SHBG since it is needed to calculate bioavailable testosterone.
